ChatPaddi
A WhatsApp-style messaging app for Africa — real-time chat, voice & video calls, walkie-talkie-style channels for communities and churches, and 24-hour status updates, built to work well on slow or unstable mobile data.

The Challenge
African WhatsApp users have no real indigenous alternative: existing apps assume fast, cheap data, dont ship with major local languages, and give organisations and churches no channel/push-to-talk tool built for group broadcast rather than one-to-one chat.
Our Solution
A FastAPI + WebSocket backend (SQLAlchemy, LiveKit for calls) paired with a React Native/Expo mobile app. Messages queue offline and sync on reconnect, images auto-compress, a data-saver mode is on by default, and the app ships in English, French, Swahili, Yoruba and Hausa out of the box.
